Pig Cents for the Future Seminar is slated for Sept. 9 at the Johnson County Fairgrounds in Iowa City, IA, and Sept. 10 at the Manchester Community Center, Manchester, IA.
Both programs sponsored by the Iowa State University Extension, Iowa Pork Industry Center and Iowa Pork Producers Association provide prospective and resource information at no charge to attendees.
John Lawrence, Iowa State University (ISU) Extension livestock economist, will provide opening comments on the outlook for feed and pork prices.
Concurrent sessions feature:
--John Lawrence or Shane Ellis, ISU Extension livestock economists, discussing margins with the tools of Crush and Profit Tracker;
--Des Moines attorney Eldon McAfee, Beving, Swanson & Forest, P.C., discussing options when a contract is broken or renegotiated;
--Erin Herbold, ISU staff attorney, addressing legal questions and answers dealing with contract feeding, case studies;
--John Mabry, director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center, offering ideas for improving production efficiencies during current economic times;
--Lawrence discussing the pros and cons of joining a pig supply network and setting pricing structures; and
--Greg Brenneman, ISU Extension engineer, discussing value of manure to the total operation and Jim Jensen, ISU Extension farm management, highlighting Fin Pak (financial evaluation), available to pork producers at no cost.
The program will conclude with a roundtable question and answer session with all speakers.
