USMEF introduces new pork, beef dishes at Foodex Japan

U.S. picnics, Idaho finger steak, gourmet burgers and French dip sandwiches were promoted and sampled.

Following a canceled show in 2020 and limited attendance in 2021, participants and visitors to Foodex earlier this month saw a strong return for one of Asia's most important food trade shows. Japan is one of the world's largest meat importers and pays premiums for quality product which makes it an ultra-competitive market and Foodex a critical industry show.

With funding from USDA's Agricultural Trade Promotion Program and Market Access Program, the Beef Checkoff Program, Texas Beef Council and National Pork Board, the U.S. Meat Export Federation met with member suppliers and Japanese importers, introduced new beef and pork dishes and presented promotional plans for the coming year.

"The return of in-person meetings is so important in Japan and the enthusiasm for this year's show was tremendous," says Takemichi Yamashoji, USMEF Japan director. "With changing demand and rising costs, the trade was very receptive to our new recipe and promotional ideas."

With the duty on picnic/cushion meat imports decreasing in April, USMEF promoted and sampled U.S. picnics as an alternative cut to ginger pork and pulled pork dishes for consideration as new foodservice menu items and in retail promotions. USMEF also promoted and sampled Idaho finger steak, gourmet burgers and French dip sandwiches as options to meet growing consumer demand for take-out and delivery meals.
