Ventilation is a very important component to the health of a swine herd in today’s modern facilities.
Barry Kerkaert, veterinarian with Pipestone Veterinary Services in Minnesota, says the ventilation system can be considered similar to the “sixth player on the court, or 12th player on the field, it’s the fans — no pun intended.” He stresses that veterinarians can have a proper diagnosis and a great health plan in place on the farms of their clients, “and still if you don’t have ventilation working properly for you, you can be challenged and challenge your client for success.”
Kerkaert moderated a session at the recent Allen D. Leman Swine Conference with Aaron Lower, Carthage Veterinary Service in Illinois, and Adam Schelkopf, Pipestone Veterinary Services, as the two young veterinarians spoke on the importance of ventilation and filtration systems and the proper management of such.
