One-stop-shop launched for improving manure management

The Manure Knowledge Kiosk offers resources, knowledge and connections to support improved manure management in livestock in countries with developing livestock industries.

Manure management is essential in recycling nutrients and organic matter for healthy and productive soils, enhancing food security while reducing emissions to the environment. This website offers all stakeholders in the livestock sector a one-stop-shop to support and technical services. The Kiosk is part of Livestock and Manure Management Component of the Agriculture Initiative supported by the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants.

This is part of a broader global effort to address short-lived climate pollutants – including methane and black carbon-emissions from key agricultural sectors by sharing and implementing best practices in a manner that enhances food security and livelihoods and is consistent with broader climate change objectives.

The Kiosk focuses on providing support to countries, projects and practitioners to help them in improving manure management, and to connect them to the knowledge, skills and resources they need. In practice this means:

  • Access to an international library on manure management;

  • Access to a Roster of Experts for assistance;

  • Show-case examples of actual practice change;

  • Connection to the Livestock GEO-wiki, showing global information about and the impact of manure management.

There are many opportunities for improving manure management, with the disclosed information the Kiosk also aims to inspire local stakeholders to improve their manure management policies and practices.

The web portal is hosted by the Global Agenda for Sustainable Livestock, a partnership of livestock sector stakeholders committed to the sustainable development of the sector.

The Manure Kiosk is part of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants. The CCAC is a voluntary global partnership of governments, intergovernmental organizations, business, scientific institutions and civil society committed to catalyzing concrete, substantial action to reduce SLCPs (including methane, black carbon and many hydrofluorocarbons). The Coalition works through collaborative initiatives to raise awareness, mobilize resources, and lead transformative actions in key emitting sectors. The Livestock and Manure Management Component is coordinated by Wageningen UR Livestock Research in close collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the Stockholm Environmental Institute in Bangkok, the International Livestock Research Institute in Nairobi and the Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center in Costa Rica.
