Vaccine Update

Intervet, Inc. has received USDA approval for a 21-day slaughter withdrawal on End-FLUence 2, its bivalent swine influenza virus (SIV) vaccine. This is a reduction from the product's original 60-day requirement, allowing producers the option of culling vaccinated animals in a timely manner. End-FLUence 2 offers protection from respiratory disease caused by the H3N2 and H1N1 SIV subtypes. The vaccine is manufactured with Intervet's proprietary Microsol Diluvac Forte dual adjuvant system to optimize immune response. The vaccine is available in 50-dose and 250-dose bottles.

Mycoplasma Vaccine

Pfizer Animal Health has two new label claims for its single-dose Mycoplasmal pneumonia vaccine, Respisure-ONE: vaccination of pigs as young as one week of age and 25 weeks duration of immunity. These new label claims afford producers and veterinarians greater flexibility in designing an effective vaccination protocol. Early vaccination, even in the face of maternal antibodies, may help control early mycoplasma challenge, while still protecting up to market. In addition, vaccination of young pigs may establish protection before pigs are seroconverting to PRRS (porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome), which has been shown to interfere with mycoplasma protection. Respisure-ONE is the only one-dose mycoplasma vaccination containing the patented adjuvant Amphigen, which results in an enhanced immune response, longer duration of immunity, less injection site irritation and excellent syringeability, according to the company.

Schering-Plough Animal Health Corp. has introduced MaxiVac Excell, a bivalent swine influenza virus (SIV) vaccine targeting the H1N1 and H3N2 viral strains. The vaccine reduces viral shedding from both the lungs and nasal passages, and has been proven to reduce clinical signs of pneumonia associated with SIV, says the company. Pre-slaughter withdrawal time is 21 days. MaxiVac Excell is available in 50-, 125- and 250-dose packages.
