Michael Azain, Ph.D.
Azain obtained his bachelor's of science in Animal Science from Pennsylvania State University in 1979. He received his master's of science in Foods and Nutrition from the University of Georgia in 1981 and his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in 1984. Upon completion of his dissertation, he accepted a position in the New Products Identification Group in the Animal Sciences Division at Monsanto in St. Louis. In 1986, he moved into the Drug Delivery Discovery group at Monsanto working on somatotropins.
In 1988, he started as an assistant professor of Animal and Dairy Science at the University of Georgia, where he is currently professor and graduate coordinator. He teaches undergraduate and graduate level animal nutrition courses, freshman seminar, and has directed study abroad programs in Toulouse, France, and Granada, Spain. Azain's research interests include investigating the relationship of macronutrient intake with composition of grain in meat animals, the understanding and manipulation of lipid metabolism, and the evaluation of alternative feed ingredients and feed enzymes in both swine and poultry diets. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed scientific papers and is an active member of the Swine Nutrition Regional Committee (NCCC-042). He has served as a reviewer, editorial board member and section editor (Growth and Developmental Biology) for the Journal of Animal Science. Azain is also on the editorial board of the Journal of Nutrition, has served on several grant review panels and holds an adjunct appointment in the Poultry Science Department at the University of Georgia.
Woo Kyun Kim, Ph.D.
Kim is an associate professor/poultry nutritionist in the Department of Poultry Science, University of Georgia. He received a bachelor's of science in animal science from KonKuk University, South Korea, a master's of science in poultry science from the Pennsylvania State University, and a Ph.D. in nutritional science from the Pennsylvania State University. He has been trained as a postdoc fellow from Texas A & M University and the University of California Los Angeles. Kim worked as an assistant professor/monogastric nutritionist at the University of Manitoba, Canada, before his joining as a faculty member at the University of Georgia. His research has been focused on roles of pre- and probiotics, bioactives, amino acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes on growth/laying performance, feed nutrient utilization and gut health in poultry. He has published 133 peer-reviewed papers, 17 proceedings and symposium papers, and 123 abstracts. Kim served as an associate editor for Poultry Science and an editorial board member for Journal of Applied Poultry Research and currently is a section editor for Poultry Science, and an associate editor for Canadian Journal of Animal Science.
