Serbia has reported its first cases of suspected African swine fever, three in the Belgrade area and one in the district of Podunavski. According to the Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health, all of the infected animals were backyard pigs.

Emina Milakara, DVM, with Veterinary Services for Serbia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management confirmed to the OIE Sunday that seven pigs were killed, while another 114 were culled.

Earlier this month, Bulgaria declared an ASF state of emergency saying 130,000 pigs were culled in two weeks due to detection of the disease on six industrial farms in the country. In late-July, Slovakia reported its first ASF outbreak in the village of Strážne, Trebišov district. A week later, a second case was confirmed in the village of Veľký Kamenec.
