Iowa Swine Groups provide $37k in college scholarships

Scholarships support young Iowans interested in the swine industry.

Young Iowans interested in a future in the swine industry headed off to colleges and universities this fall with $37,000 in scholarships to help support their dreams. The scholarships were provided by the Iowa Pork Foundation, the Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA), and the Iowa Purebred Swine Council (IPSC).  

Iowa Pork Foundation scholarships

The foundation awarded scholarships to 10 incoming first-year students and eight returning students this year. Nelda Christian Graduate Fellowships will be presented to one student in the Iowa State University (ISU) College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and to one ISU College of Veterinary Medicine student.

First-year students each received $1,000:

  • Hopkinton — DeLainey Fellinger, Kirkwood Community College

  • Independence — Carson Frye, Kirkwood Community College

  • Lehigh — Carson Lambert, Iowa State University

  • Martelle — Ivan Lambertsen, Iowa State University

  • Monticello — Adele Hogan, Iowa State University

  • Parkersburg — Joshua Haan, Hawkeye Community College

  • Roland — Jackson Sterle, Iowa State University

  • Runnells — Tricia Veldhuizen, Iowa Central Community College

  • Sioux Center — Jacob Dragstra, Northwestern College

  • Williamsburg — Nicole Wardenburg, Iowa State University

Returning students were awarded $2,000 each:

  • Cambridge — Ashley Kahler, Iowa State University

  • Hampton — Emilio Valenzuela Morteo, Iowa State University

  • Marathon — Abby Bean, Iowa State University

  • Prairie City — Gavin Branderhorst, Des Moines Area Community College

  • Roland — Jacob Sterle, Iowa State University

  • State Center — Avery Mather, Iowa State University

  • Walker — Isaac Wiley, Iowa State University

  • Weldon — Riley Bell, Iowa State University

Graduate fellowships are worth $3,000 each:

  • Ames — Peiyang Li, Iowa State University

  • Manchester — Alex Bishop, Iowa State University

Iowa Foundation for Agricultural Advancement (IFAA)

IFAA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing scholarships, financial awards, and incentives for college-bound Iowa youth seeking a post-secondary education in the area of agriculture. IPPA and IPSC provided $5,000 in scholarship support through IFAA.

Recipients of $1,000 Iowa Pork Producers Association scholarships were:

  • Keota — Bryce Greiner, Des Moines Area Community College

  • Washington — Gracie Greiner, Iowa State University

Recipients of $1,500 Iowa Purebred Swine Council scholarships were:

  • Estherville — Maggie White, Des Moines Area Community College

  • Prairie City — Colton Warrick, Iowa State University
