Ractopamine Standards Approved by CodexRactopamine Standards Approved by Codex

The Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) voted to adopt global food safety standards for ractopamine. This included adoption of Acceptable Daily Intake and Maximum Residue Levels for pig and cattle muscle, fat, liver and kidney. This was the fifth time that Codex had considered setting standards for ractopamine. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) said, the “Codex Commission proved they are willing to trust science and make decisions based on facts rather than politics.” The National Pork Producers Council (NPPC) said, “NPPC is pleased that the Codex commission finally approved this scientifically proven safe product. The commission, as it should, fulfilled its mandate to base standards and guidelines on science.” Raactopamine is currently approved in 26 countries, including the United States.
