FDA annual antibiotics report released

The Food and Drug Administration released its annual antibiotics report that showed increases in both the sale and distribution of antibiotics for use in food-producing animals in 2014.

According to the report, 2014 domestic sales and distribution of antimicrobial drugs increased 4% over 2013 figures and rose 22% since 2009. Sales of medically important antibiotics approved for use in food animals grew 3% in 2014, but rose by 23% between 2009 and 2014. In 2014, domestic sales and distribution of medically important antimicrobials accounted for 62% of the total domestic sales of all antimicrobials approved for use in food-producing animals.

Animal health companies are required to report to the FDA annually sales and distribution data as mandated by the Animal Drug User Fee Act.
