This week Feedstuffs is reporting that PIC, a division of Genus plc, has taken part in the first exome sequencing in pigs. The company worked in collaboration with Edinburgh Genomics and The Roslin Institute on the project.

PIC explains that exome sequencing is a cost-effective strategy to selectively sequence key parts of DNA and enables faster genomics progress. The results of the research, published in BMC Genomics July 2014, were generated from a target group of 96 pigs representing the known variations in one of PIC's global proprietary swine populations.

The information from the research will be targeted at achieving more accurate genomic selection in swine, including work to reduce embryonic and/or fetal death loss in pregnant pigs.
