Last February, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter (D-NY) sent a letter to over 60 fast-food companies, meat producers, meat processors and grocery store chains asking them to disclose their policies on antibiotic use in meat and poultry production. She released the findings from the nearly 30 companies that responded. According to Congresswoman Slaughter, “There is an urgent need to change the practices of American food producers to ensure that antibiotics are used responsibly in the production of food animals.” The congresswoman ranked the companies by antibiotic-free, moderate antibiotic use, and routine antibiotic use. Congresswoman Slaughter, a long-time critic of current antibiotic use in livestock, has introduced “The Preservation of Antibiotics for Medical Treatment Act (PAMTA), which would ban the use of antibiotics in livestock and poultry for growth promotion, prevention and control.
