When Congress returns later this month, the key question for U.S. agriculture will be, “What about the farm bill?”  The Senate has named its 12 farm bill conferees and is waiting on the House Republican leadership to name the House conferees.  Also, the House leadership is expected to bring to the floor a nutrition only bill that would cut $40 billion from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

The current farm bill expires on Sept. 30 and the House will be in session only nine legislative days in September.  It is critically important that producers contact their congressman and ask them to complete the farm bill.  Other issues for the Congress to consider this fall include Syria, debt ceiling, appropriations, continuing resolution and immigration reform.
