USDA names new head of animal care

Bernadette Juarez has been named the new acting deputy administrator for the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Animal Care program.

Juarez will lead the USDA’s efforts to protect and ensure the welfare of animals nationwide that are covered under the Animal Welfare Act and the Horse Protection Act.

Prior to this position, Juarez served with APHIS’ Investigative and Enforcement Services, first as deputy director, then as director. She previously served as a trial attorney for the USDA’s Office of the General Counsel from 2002 to 2009.
