USDA Issues Final BSE Rule

USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) published a final rule regarding import regulations for animals and animal products concerning bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The rule describes a new system for classifying regions in other countries as having negligible, controlled, or undetermined risk for BSE.

The classification uses a science-based system consistent with the World Organization of Animal Health. The rule prescribes the conditions under which certain commodities may be imported into the U.S. from regions that have been designated as having negligible, controlled or undetermined risk for the disease.
