House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) said he was committed to have the House of Representatives vote on the farm bill during the lame-duck session when Congress returns after the election. At a campaign event in Boise, ID, Cantor said, “I’m committed to bring the issue to the floor and then to see a way forward so we can get the votes to pass a bill.” Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), in a statement, said that she was pleased the House will vote on the farm bill after the election noting: “It is critical that we are able to finalize the farm bill before the beginning of next year when farm programs begin to expire, which would impact milk and food prices for families.” Timing will be the question. Some are wondering how much time the leadership will allow to get the bill completed in the House because a number of amendments are expected. Will it be the House Agriculture Committee passed farm bill that will be considered? Also, will there be enough time for a conference committee before the 112^th Congress ends this year? Congress returns on Nov. 13 for its lame-duck session.
