Food Insecurity – One in Seven Americans

One in seven American households and individuals or 14.3% were considered to be food insecure in 2013 according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Economic Research Service (ERS). This represents 17.5 million Americans. According to the ERS, 26.1% of the households that were considered to be food insecure last year were African-American households, 23.7% were Hispanic households and 19.5% were households with children. In 2007, 11.1% of Americans were considered food insecure. Food insecurity is the inability to afford an adequate diet at least some times in the 12-month period.
