Mike Pearson examines the damage left behind by Hurricane Idalia. It is estimated that one third of the pecan crop was destroyed. Parts of southeast Georgia received 6 ½ inches of rain and the trees were full of nuts. Over 5,000 trees were destroyed and 30 percent of this year’s pecan production is gone.

Part of the issue for many farms will be the length of time it takes to grow a pecan tree: 5-7 years before the trees lost will be producing nuts again.

The USDA and other officials have been touring Florida and Georgia where the storm hit and are working to help farmers not just replace trees and help with row crop damage but to give them the resources they need to restore and rebuild their enterprises.

Now, a week later, livestock producers are surveying the damage they received. Many poultry and hog farms lost power for days during the story. However, thanks to generators, many of the farms will survive with limited damage.
