Mike Pearson examines a case of Avian influenza reported in South Dakota at a turkey farm last week.
It's a disease that is often fatal for domestic chicken duck and turkey flocks.
The first outbreak of Avian Influenza was reported in April 2023.
It's a problem because wild birds can spread the virus undetected to domestic flocks.
In Early 2022 it started causing havoc on bird farms and caused 60 million birds to be euthanized and caused egg prices to hit record prices.
Farms spent millions on biosecurity efforts trying to combat the Avian Influenza because even small parts can be carried and spread to other barns meaning more birds being euthanized.
No farms had reported an outbreak for nearly six months which some think it means biosecurity efforts are helping.
However, some Industry watchers don't think the industry is out of the woods and are asking producers to double check their biosecurity practices.
Farm Progress America is a daily look at key issues in agriculture. It is produced and presented by Mike Pearson, farm broadcaster and host of This Week in Agribusiness.
