Kansas State's Tokach to Receive Animal Science Award

Mike Tokach, Kansas State University (KSU) Extension specialist and professor in swine nutrition, will receive the 2012 American Society of Animal Science Extension award at the society’s annual meeting July 16 in Phoenix, AZ.

Tokach and his swine research team provide practical solutions to improve production efficiency and reduce cost to improve the economic competitiveness of pork producers. His team has pioneered methods to accurately feed gestating sows using weight and backfat measurements. Their nursery nutrition programs serve as the standard for the swine industry in several countries.

Tokach also serves as state leader for Extension in the Department of Animal Sciences and Industry.

Tokach is a winner of the Outstanding Young Extension Special Award from the Midwest Section of the American Society of Animal Science. He has led the KSU Swine Team to numerous team awards, including two of the first National Pork Board awards for innovative Extension programs and the KSU Research and Extension Team Award.

In 2005, Tokach was named “One of the 50 Most Influential People in the U.S. swine industry in the Last 50 Years” by National Hog Farmer magazine. He was also honored as one of the Masters of the Pork Industry by that publication in 2010.
