World-renowned English consulting pig veterinarian Michael R. Muirhead, 66, died in early January.
Amongst his many achievements were authorship of several swine texts and training schedules for hog farm staff. He was lead author of a 600-page book on "Managing Pig Health and the Treatment of Disease – A Reference for the Farm."
He received many awards including the 2000 Allen D. Leman Science in Practice Award from the University of Minnesota.
A pioneer in adopting technology, he was among the early advocates of segregated early weaning, single-service artificial insemination and all-out batch systems. He put these methods into practice as a partner in a 240-sow operation.
