Producers encouraged to communicate with consumer

Pork producers are learning that today's consumer wants transparency in the entire food chain, from the treatment of the pigs in the barns to the presentations of the pork in the grocery store.

Today’s pork producers are in a transparent market, with consumers and regulators wanting to know what is going on in barns across the countryside. Phil Lempert has spent his life in supermarkets and he spoke with the National Pork Board about the importance of watching and communicating with consumers about food trends and how pork fits into that model.

Lempert also hosted an online broadcast event — Real Change: A Live Discussion of On-Farm Antibiotic Use — that had about 60,000 live viewers as experts discussed the pork industry’s leadership in responsible antibiotic use and how it has implemented new strict guidelines set by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

In the accompanying video, Lempert gives a run-down of his message to the NPB members, as well as a preview of the broadcast event, a replay of which can be viewed at RealChangeOnFarms.org.
