Groups Intervene in COOL Lawsuit
August 19, 2013
The U.S. Cattlemen's Association (USCA), National Farmers Union (NFU), American Sheep Industry (ASI), and Consumer Federation of America (CFA) jointly filed a motion to intervene in the country-of-origin labeling (COOL) lawsuit. If granted intervenor status by the court, USCA, NFU, ASI and CFA will be presenting arguments in defense of the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) regulations on COOL.
The lawsuit was filed last month by United States, Canadian and Mexican meat and livestock associations challenging USDA’s COOL rule. The Department of Justice on behalf of USDA filed its brief opposing the motion for a preliminary injunction, saying the plaintiffs requested an injunction without demonstrating that they are entitled to the emergency relief they seek.
