There are many ways to evaluate interventions in a swine operation. But how do we measure and evaluate the outcome?  Are the results just due to random chance or are there real differences? Are there factors that make the data less reliable?  Today we have a panel of experts who have been evaluating interventions in pig populations and the validity of the results throughout their careers.  Please join us as we get their opinions of how to design and carry out field studies to make better decisions for your business.

Dr. Beau Peterson, PhD
General Manager
Carthage Veterinary Service

Dr. Beau Peterson grew up in the small town of Alpha, Illinois on a diversified crop and livestock farm. He attended the University of Illinois, where he received his Bachelors, Masters, and Ph.D. degrees in Animal Science. His research during graduate school focused on pig growth and development and the use of practical management strategies to optimize pork production systems. After completing his Ph.D. in June of 2008, Dr. Peterson joined The Maschhoffs in Carlyle, Illinois, where he led Research and Development for 7 years followed by operational leadership roles in supply chain and general management. Dr. Peterson currently serves as the General Manager of Carthage Veterinary Service and the Director of Research for Carthage Innovative Swine Solutions. Dr. Peterson is also an Adjunct Professor of Animal Science at the University of Illinois, and an Affiliate Faculty member in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostics and Production Animal Medicine at Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, where he has interacted routinely with undergraduate and graduate students through teaching and active participation on several graduate student thesis committees.

Dr. Derald Holtkamp, DVM
Professor, Department of Veterinary Diagnostics and Production Animal Medicine

Dr. Derald Holtkamp is a Professor in the Department of Veterinary Diagnostics and Production Animal Medicine (VDPAM) in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University (Ames, Iowa, U.S.). He received his DVM, MS in Agricultural Economics, and BS in Agricultural Business with a minor in statistics all from Iowa State University. Prior to joining Iowa State, he was a private veterinary consultant. He has also served as a technical services veterinarian for ADViSYS Inc., Vice President of Swine Applications for MetaFarms Inc., Director of Pork Development for E-Markets, Inc., and as a veterinarian and service manager for Smithfield Foods in Warsaw, North Carolina. Dr. Holtkamp’s research focuses on managing infectious swine diseases, biosecurity, disease risk assessment, and the economics of animal health and disease. He has authored over 40 peer-reviewed publications, is a frequent speaker in the U.S. and internationally with over 230 invited presentations, and has mentored over 260 professional and graduate students.
