Please join Drs. Chris Chase and Alex Ramirez for a review of the fundamentals of immunology.  Topics covered will include a review of the main mechanisms or defenses utilized by the body, how immune responses are initiated, and the tools used in creating a robust immune system.

Alejandro “Alex” Ramirez

College of Veterinary Medicine, Iowa State University

Dr. Ramirez is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico where he lived until he graduated from high school. He then went to Iowa State University (ISU) and obtained a BS degree in Animal Science in 1989 and his DVM in 1993. He practiced a rural private clinic in NW Iowa in Cherokee for over 10 years. He worked primarily in a large animal practice with an emphasis in swine. He left private practice to pursue his interest in teaching and working with students. In 2004 he obtained his Master’s in Public Health from The University of Iowa. In 2005 he became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. He has been working at ISU since 2004 and in 2008 joined the Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Department. In 2011 he received his PhD in Veterinary Microbiology with emphasis in Preventive Medicine from ISU. He is currently a Professor in swine production medicine with duties in teaching, research, and professional practice and Assistant Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. Dr. Ramirez is also a past President of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians and currently holds the Roy A Schultz Professorship in Swine Medicine.

South Dakota State University

Chris Chase is a professor of veterinary science at South Dakota State University in Brookings, SD. He received his DVM from Iowa State University and MS and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been at SDSU since 1992. He was involved in clinical practice and consulting for almost 30 years. His research and diagnostic interests are in bovine and porcine immunology, respiratory disease pathogenesis, emerging diseases with wildlife interface and vaccine development. Dr. Chase is the Past-President of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology and the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Disease. Dr. Chase co-founded RTI (Research, Technology Innovation) LLC., an animal health contract research organization founded in 1994 that does studies in poultry, swine and cattle and is Chief Scientific Officer and has served as President since 1998.
