When “mystery swine disease” began devastating pig populations in North America in the late-1980s, it was clear something needed to be done.

As the industry began to learn more and porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome became the agreed-upon name for the disease, Boehringer Ingelheim was hard at work developing a vaccine to fight it.
