John Patience, PhD, has officially retired from the department of animal science at Iowa State University where he served as professor of applied swine nutrition. Dr. Patience was hired by Iowa State University as an associate professor in 2008 and moved to role of professor in 2010. His research has focused on swine nutrition, but he also worked with pork producers as an expert in the Iowa Pork Industry Center.

“Dr. Patience anticipated the needs of the swine industry in large part because of his breadth of relationships that enabled him to gather and process information to effectively identify emerging and future needs that his program could address.  In addition to his world class extension program, Dr. Patience’s legacy has also occurred through his investment in training and mentoring many graduate and undergraduate researchers,” said Jason Ross, Iowa State Department of Animal Science Lloyd Anderson Endowed Professor in Physiology, director of the Iowa Pork Industry Center. “Many of these trainees are now nationally and internationally influential in production agriculture through their own careers.”

Dr. Patience is also a remarkable mentor to his colleagues and has no doubt strengthened their abilities to increase their impact on the swine industry and on animal agriculture in general, Ross added.

In addition to his ISU role, Patience has served on numerous swine industry committees, having most recently helped organized the International Conference on Pig Survivability, the International Conference on Pig Nutrition and Iowa Swine Day.

Prior to his time at ISU, Patience spent 21 years at the Prairie Swine Centre, a swine research facility at the University of Saskatchewan, but his career in the swine industry began in 1975 when he was hired as a provincial swine specialist for the Saskatchewan Department of Agriculture.

In 2019, National Hog Farmer honored Dr. Patience as a Master of the Pork Industry, when his contributions and commitment to the swine industry were celebrated. To read about his career as well as insight he garnered along the way, view the article here.
