TPA headed to president's desk (Updated)

The Senate voted 60-38 to send the Trade Promotion Authority, or fast-track trade legislation, to President Obama, ending more than two weeks of legislative wrangling. Thirteen Democratic Senators joined 47 Republican in this effort. The legislation is now headed to President Obama for his approval.

This will allow the president to finalize the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations in the coming weeks. The North America Meat Institute said, “Today’s Senate approval of TPA is a major step forward that sends a message to the world that the U.S. is serious about trade.”

The National Pork Producers Council applauded Congress’ approval of TPA and said, “Now we need U.S. trade negotiators to get the best deal possible from the other TPP countries and to finalize one of the most significant regional trade agreements ever.”

This successful effort was the result of President Obama, House and Senate Republican leaders, and pro-trade Democrats working together.
