With the Vermont mandatory GMO labeling law going into effect on July 1, intense negotiations continue to take place between Senators Pat Roberts (R-KS), Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee, and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), Ranking Member of the Committee, in trying to reach an agreement on biotech labeling.
Indications are there will some type of mandatory disclosure requirements for foods with biotech ingredients. Meat that is derived from animals that eat GMO feed would be exempt. This is similar to the Vermont law. One of the items that still needs to be resolved is whether processed products that contain meat (example: soup containing meat) would be covered. Any agreement reached will need 60 votes to pass.
