The PharVision Palm Scan from Classic Medical can be used for early pregnancy checking as well as accurate backfat thickness and loin depth measurements. The scanner features a hard-faced probe cap to help reduce the chance of hitting the crystal, a more robust motor for driving the probe, and a formed probe cap that allows you to feel the plane of scan without having to look at the probe. The lightweight unit (6.5 oz.) has a rechargeable battery, easy-to-use control buttons and a very sharp image display with four variable depths, making it easier to enlarge an image for more precise caliper placement.

MicrobMix is a unique, direct-fed microbial feed additive that enhances gastrointestinal performance and aides in the management of noxious waste by-products. Waste Activator, Pit Pac and Lagoon Activator are formulated to improve confinement environment and reduce hydrogen sulfide and ammonia emissions. Waste Activator is applied in conjunction with the feeding of MicrobMix. Pit Pac and Lagoon Activator are stand-alone products formulated for use in hog confinement deep storage pits and lagoons, respectively.

Injectable Antibiotic Approved
A single-dose, long-lasting injectable antibiotic for swine is now available from Pfizer Animal Health. Excede for Swine sterile suspension is a sustained-release form of ceftiofur that provides continuous protection for at least seven days. The product is effective in treating Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, Pasteurella multocida, Haemophilus parasuis and Streptococcus suis. The single dose means pigs can be handled less frequently, reducing labor and the added physical stress on animals from multiple injection treatments. The product's timed-release formulation produces sustained injection site concentrations that dictate a 14-day, pre-slaughter withdrawal period.

Combination Clearance
Phibro Animal Health announces the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's approval of the combination use of Mecadox and feedgrade Terramycin for swine. The company says this new combination clearance means producers can now get improved pig performance and excellent protection against both enteric and respiratory diseases for less cost. With this combination clearance, swine producers can now keep Mecadox in pig diets from weaning throughout the nursery and early grower, even when feeding a pneumonia medication.
