Iowa State University (ISU) researchers are engaged in three projects investigating the environmental impact of livestock confinement.
One project is a six-state effort to evaluate odor and gas emissions from swine and poultry facilities, funded by the USDA Initiative for Future Agriculture and Food Systems.
Premium Standard Farms is funding a two-year research study at its Princeton, MO, hog facilities. ISU researchers Dwaine Bundy and Steve Hoff are working on odor control strategies for buildings and manure storage lagoons.
A computer model will be used to develop an odor dispersion model to guide site selection for hog facilities, says Hoff.
