The Illinois Pork Producers Association is teaming up with The Ohio State University to host a biosecurity workshop “Becoming a Swientist” at the 2019 Illinois State Fair. All junior swine exhibitors are welcome for a fun afternoon in the barrow barn learning how to keep kids and pigs healthy.

The workshop begins at 4 p.m. on Aug. 7 with a rotation of four hands-on stations. It will conclude with complementary pizza and a panel of pork professionals. Parents are encouraged to join us for the panel discussion. Panelists include Andrew Bowman, OSU; Thomas Titus, IPPA; John Heins, National Pork Board; and Jennifer Shike, Farm Journal’s PORK.

There will be free gifts for those in attendance. Plus, each participant will be awarded a free “biosecurity bucket” filled with essentials, courtesy of OSU. After completing four stations learning about human and animal health, the goal is for exhibitors to take the bucket home and put it into action using the skills they learned from the workshop.

IPPA continues to lead the conversation around animal health, especially in a time where the threat of foreign animal disease is more prevalent than ever. Pork Checkoff dollars and funds from OSU were used to host this event free of charge to junior swine exhibitors.
