Derald Holtkamp, professor of veterinary diagnostic and production animal medicine in the College of Veterinary Medicine, has received Iowa State University’s Marvin A. Pomerantz Award.

Holtkamp has a sustained record of outstanding service in teaching, research, outreach and institutional service. He is recognized as an international thought leader on the importance of and control of infectious diseases, especially those important to the swine industry. His research and interactions with the swine industry globally have had significant impacts on swine health and productivity.

An Iowa State faculty member since 2006, Holtkamp’s research focuses on biosecurity, disease risk assessment and the economics of animal health and disease with an emphasis on PRRSV and PEDV.

Holtkamp is the leader of the College of Veterinary Medicine’s internship programs in swine, bovine, poultry and rural veterinary medicine. These programs have attracted well over 400 students with hands-on, real-life summer experiences alongside practicing food animal veterinarians.

A member of the Iowa State Faculty Senate, Holtkamp also chairs the College of Veterinary Medicine’s Governance Council.

The Pomerantz Award recognizes a Iowa State faculty member deemed outstanding in teaching, research and/or outreach.
