Newborn piglets experience a rapid decrease in body temperature immediately after birth, increasing the risk of mortality. 

Newborn piglets, especially those of low birth weight, struggle to maintain body temperature as they develop their ability to thermoregulate. Chilled pigs are also less mobile and therefore do not nurse as much as they need to and do not receive enough colostrum. In addition, they are more likely to be laid-on by the sow.
