Members Ask for Rule on Downer Calves
A group of 72 members of congress are asking the United States Department of Agriculture to move forward with a rule to ban the slaughter of downer calves for food.
In a letter to the USDA, the members claim that keeping disabled calves alive in pens is “inhumane, poses food safety risks and encourages workers to handle the calves roughly to get them to stand up.”

The letter also argues that the economic impact of a rule would be far less than industry estimates, citing a Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) economic analysis.
Congresswomen Grace Meng (D-NY) and Carol Shea-Porter (D-NH) are leading the effort.
