Producers Prepare to Enjoy World Pork Expo Attractions

Thousands of pork producers from across the country and worldwide are expected to gather at the National Pork Producers Council's (NPPC) 2010 World Pork Expo, slated for June 9-11 at the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, IA.

The largest pork industry exhibition will showcase the industry's leading new production technologies and feature exhibitors who will discuss industry trends, products and services.

NPPC President Sam Carney, member of the Iowa Pork Producers Association board of directors and a producer from Adair, IA, has attended World Pork Expo for 25 years.

“World Pork Expo is a great opportunity to not only learn from industry experts, but also learn from fellow pork producers. I'm in great company at the World Pork Expo.”

The pork industry's leading influencers, producers, exhibitors and leaders can be found at the trade show, which provides the perfect venue for producers to touch base with current suppliers and visit with new ones.

“Over the years, I've made small improvements in my operation based on recommendations I received from the experts at Expo,” Carney explains. “Their advice has given me the opportunity to use new products, grow a profitable operation and produce a quality product.”

The trade show encompasses international companies and features more than 450 suppliers. World Pork Expo's trade show provides networking and prospecting opportunities and offers the ideal time to sort through new products and services. Domestic and foreign suppliers can engage producers and educate them on their company's product lines.

Seminars offered during Expo provide a great way to get a comprehensive look at everything affecting the market. Industry experts address issues and offer valuable insights regarding the economic forecast and herd health management.

“The pork industry has a great influence on the global market; we sell hogs all over the world,” Carney notes. “As a producer, there may be something I need to change in my operation to improve the industry as a whole, and I may not hear about it until I attend an expert-led seminar at Expo.”

The block party mixes business with pleasure as vendors host dinner for their customers and bands play throughout the evening.

The annual event also features America's Best Genetics Showcase, Farm Toy Show and Sale, National Hog Farmer's New Product Showcase, 2010 Junior National Swine Show, Cruisin' with the Hogs, Pig Races, World Pork Open Clay Target Championship and the World Pork Open Golf Outing.

“I'm looking forward to all of the activities we have going on at the World Pork Expo,” says Carney. “It's not all work and no play. We've got plenty of food, entertainment and top industry information for people of all ages.”

PQA Plus and TQA Certification Offered

The Iowa Pork Producers Association (IPPA) is partnering with Iowa State University Extension swine specialists and the Pork Checkoff to offer free Pork Quality Assurance (PQA) Plus and Transport Quality Assurance (TQA) certification sessions during World Pork Expo.

The sessions will be offered Thursday, June 10, at the Walnut Center on the Iowa State Fairgrounds. The PQA Plus session will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. TQA certification will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Registration begins 30 minutes prior to the start of each session.

Pork Industry Tour

World Pork Expo offers producers from around the globe the opportunity to experience midwestern agriculture — and hospitality — at its finest. Attendees are invited to arrive in Iowa to participate in a two-day industry tour on June 7 and June 8 before World Pork Expo begins on June 9.

Day 1 begins with a tour of PDI, one of the largest food distribution companies in the country, which delivers food to seven midwestern states. The next two stops include animal health product distributor IVESCO and ethanol producer Hawkeye Renewables. Participants will finish the day at Christensen Farms, before returning to Des Moines that evening.

Day 2 begins with a tour of Kinze Manufacturing, one of Iowa's largest agricultural equipment manufacturers. Participants will enjoy a home-cooked lunch and full tour of Cinnamon Ridge Farms, a large-scale farming operation in eastern Iowa, which boasts 4,000 acres of crops, wean-to-finish hog buildings, a beef operation and a Jersey dairy. The tour will make a final stop for dinner in Iowa's historic Amana Colonies before the bus returns to Des Moines.
