Swine Respiratory Disease

Pfizer Animal Health has received approval from the Food and Drug Administration for Excenel RTU EZ Sterile Suspension for the treatment and control of swine respiratory disease. Studies show that Excenel RTU EZ (ceftiofur hydrochloride) is significantly more syringeable than Excenel RTU, while maintaining the same rapid action, efficacy and safety profile. In the more than 20 years since ceftiofur was introduced as a livestock respiratory antibiotic, the susceptibility of targeted pathogens has not changed appreciably. The product features a four-day, pre-slaughter withdrawal period, making it suited for use as an antibiotic in the finishing phase. “Excenel RTU EZ offers the same effective treatment and protection against major swine bacterial pneumonia pathogens, but is now easier to administer. The new packaging (yellow skirt color) makes bottle identification much easier, and will help reduce the chance of confusion between products when used on the farm,” explains Steve Sornsen, DVM, director of swine veterinary services for Pfizer Animal Health. The intramuscular injection of Excenel RTU EZ provides therapeutic plasma concentrations in less than one hour to effectively treat and control these other pathogens: Actinobacillus pleuropneumonia, Pasteurella multocida, Salmonella cholerasuis and Streptococcus suis type 2.
