Senators Urge Support for Biodiesel

Several senators are calling on Congress and the Administration to support policies (tax credit and Renewable Fuel Standard)) for the biodiesel industry.  The senators cited a study by the National Biodiesel Board that showed that the lack of certainty of federal policies is hurting the biodiesel industry.  Almost 80 percent of U.S. biodiesel producers have scaled back production this year and nearly 60 percent have idled production.

The senators are urging that the $1 per gallon biodiesel tax credit be renewed and that EPA increase its proposed RFS requirement for biodiesel.  EPA is proposing holding the biodiesel RFS volume at 1.28 billion gallons for this year and also for 2015.  Last year’s production was approximately 1.8 billion gallons.

The senators include Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Al Franken (D-MN), and Joe Donnelly (D-IN).
