The Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) final renewable volume obligation (RVO) rule for the Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) has been sent to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for final review. The final rule will establish the ethanol blending requirements for 2014. The Renewable Fuels Association (RFA) said, “This decision is about more than targets and gallons, it is about a rationale that places highest importance on the long-term strength of this country and not the bottom line of oil companies.”
In its proposed rule, the EPA proposed lowering the requirements from the statutory requirement of 18.15 billion gallons of ethanol and biodiesel to 15.21 billion gallons. The EPA received over 340,000 public comments on the proposed rule. The final rule is expected to be released sometime this fall.
