It was a major disappointment when the National Pork Producers Council announced that this year’s World Pork Expo was to be canceled. It was the right call to make, due to the potential risk of African swine fever hitching a ride along with any of the thousands of international visitors to the annual swine extravaganza.

That disappointment returned as the calendar turned to June, and we should have been preparing to spend a few days in Des Moines. But, alas, that was not meant to be.

Disappointment was soon replaced by reinvigoration as I once again headed up the New Product Tour that would normally take place during World Pork Expo. New Product Tour carried on, though in a slightly different format.

Pride in our industry replaced the disappointment of a canceled World Pork Expo, as once again companies outdid themselves with their innovation to make the swine industry better. Just when you think all the good ideas are already being used on hog farms around the world, great thinkers come up with something better. You can see what I mean as hopefully by now you have taken a gander at all the entrants in this year’s New Product Tour as well as those products that our judges’ panel deemed worthy of being finalists in this year’s tour.

Genetics companies are continually striving for a better pig, and there are many other companies that are working to make the environment and life of the pig and the pig farmer better. As you see, some of this year’s featured products focus on farm biosecurity, whether it be helping you get trailers cleaned, making sure your feed is “clean” or helping your farm get ready in case — God forbid — a foreign animal disease does make it the U.S. swine herd.

Other products that made it on the finalist list help keep piglets warm and safe, as well as clearing the air in the barn environment, while also helping manage your operation’s feed supply.

I am continually envious of the great minds behind the new products that are rolled out each year, all with the aim of making hog producers more efficient, more productive and more profitable. It will be interesting to see what is featured in the 2020 New Product Tour.
