The Safe Food Coalition is asking USDA to approve a proposal to label beef products that are mechanically tenderized. In a letter to USDA, the coalition said that “consumers need to be provided with labeling information, so that they can make appropriate selections and take the necessary steps in handling and cooking these products.” Coalition members signing the letter included Center for Science in the Public Interest, Consumer Federation of America, Food & Water Watch and STOP Foodborne Illness. A proposal by USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) is under review at the Office of Management and Budget (OMB).
