Last year I took over the main course cooking duties for our family's Thanksgiving with my in-laws. I decided to keep it simple the first time around with just the traditional roast turkey, but this year when Hy-Vee offered customers the deal "buy a ham, get a free turkey," I decided to return to the traditional two-meat smorgasbord. As my husband always says, "It's not a holiday without a ham up Grandma's sleeve."

Even though it was a deal, I feel very fortunate every holiday, and every day, we are able to provide a meal that includes a safe, nutritious, delicious source of protein for our family. After all, did you know one out of every five children in America struggles with hunger?

As the Pipestone System points out this holiday season, food security is something many of us take for granted. That's why the team is offering to Give a Helping Ham to families in need through their communities this month.

From this past Monday through Nov. 24, for every pound of ham purchased from a participating grocery store, Pipestone is donating a pound of pork in return.

This isn't the first time the pork production system has implemented this campaign. In 2018, the Pipestone team donated more than 123,000 pounds of pork to local food banks.

This year's participating grocery stores are:

Columbia, Mo. — Three Hy-Vee locations donating to the Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri
Jefferson City, Mo. — Hy-Vee donating to The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri
Mitchell, S.D. — Coburn's donating to Feeding South Dakota
Marshall, Minn. — Hy-Vee location donating to Second Harvest Heartland
Ottumwa, Iowa — Three Hy-Vee locations donating to Food Bank of Iowa
Orange City, Iowa — Don's Food Center donating to Food Bank of Siouxland
Pipestone, Minn. — Coburn's donating to Pipestone Food Shelf
Rennselaer, Ind. — Strack & Van Til donating to local food banks
Sioux Falls, S.D. — Seven Hy-Vee locations donating to Feeding South Dakota
Sycamore, Ill. — Hy-Vee location donating to Northern Illinois Food Bank
Waterloo, Iowa — Three Hy-Vee locations donating to Northeast Iowa Food Bank

The Pipestone team says if customers are unable to make it to the store and still want to make a donation, they can do so online and Pipestone will use that money toward purchasing pork for the local food banks.
