The World Trade Organization (WTO) has set a deadline of May 23, 2013 for the United States to modify its country-of-origin labeling (COOL) requirements for meat to come into compliance. Earlier this year, the United States lost an appeal of the case brought by Canada and Mexico, claiming the COOL requirements violated previous trade agreements by affording less favorable treatment to imported livestock than to domestic livestock.
