Chaos in the House: Speaker election postponed

The election for a new Speaker of the House has been postponed as the House Republican caucus finds itself in chaos over who to select after House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) stunned his Republican colleagues when he dropped his bid for speaker last week.

McCarthy was the early favorite but could not garner the necessary votes. Now the caucus is trying to find someone who can win the Speakership and unite a divided caucus. There is even talk of a “place-holder” Speaker. Current Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) has said he will stay as Speaker until the Republicans select a new Speaker.
