Recent data shows around two out of every 10 piglets born do not live until weaning. To combat this, many producers use a heat lamp to entice piglets away from the sow to reduce the risk of crushing as well as to provide a warmer micro-environment. But does the age-old saying "if one is good, two must be better" hold true?

During the 2019 Pig Welfare Symposium, National Hog Farmer had the opportunity to catch up with Suzanne Leonard, a Ph.D. student with Iowa State University Agricultural and Biosystems Engineering at the student poster session where she presented her work on "Effects of one or two heat lamps on sow behavior and piglet performance in farrowing stalls."

Do we need more than one heat lamp in the farrowing stall?
