Join Chris Chase of South Dakota State University and Alex Ramirez of Iowa State University at 1 p.m. (Central) July 23 as they examine different situations that occur and the impact on the intended goal with vaccination, the proper timing of vaccination and differences in vaccination programs in order to ensure the best protection for the pigs you’re vaccinating.

This Science Talks. webinar, "Vaccinology: Making every vaccination count!," is a follow-up to the in-depth review of immunology that was presented by Chase and Ramirez in May. They will apply those learnings with a discussion on the real-world application of “vaccinology” as it relates to creating a proper immune response and making every vaccination count. Science Talks. webinars are presented by National Hog Farmer and sponsored by Merck Animal Health.

Ramirez is originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, where he lived until he graduated from high school. He then went to Iowa State University and obtained a bachelor of science degree in Animal Science in 1989 and his DVM in 1993. He practiced a rural private clinic in northwest Iowa in Cherokee for over 10 years. He worked primarily in a large animal practice with an emphasis in swine.

Ramirez left private practice to pursue his interest in teaching and working with students. In 2004, he obtained his master’s in Public Health from The University of Iowa. In 2005, he became board certified by the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine. He has been working at ISU since 2004 and in 2008 joined the Veterinary Diagnostic and Production Animal Medicine Department. In 2011, he received his PhD in Veterinary Microbiology with emphasis in Preventive Medicine from ISU.

He is currently a professor in swine production medicine with duties in teaching, research, and professional practice and Assistant Dean of Academic and Student Affairs. Ramirez is also a past president of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians and currently holds the Roy A. Schultz Professorship in Swine Medicine.

Chase is a professor of veterinary science at South Dakota State University in Brookings. He received his DVM from Iowa State University and MS and PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been at SDSU since 1992.

He was involved in clinical practice and consulting for almost 30 years. His research and diagnostic interests are in bovine and porcine immunology, respiratory disease pathogenesis, emerging diseases with wildlife interface and vaccine development.

Chase is the past-president of the American College of Veterinary Microbiology and the Conference of Research Workers in Animal Disease. He co-founded Research, Technology Innovation LLC., an animal health contract research organization founded in 1994 that does studies in poultry, swine and cattle and is chief scientific officer and has served as president since 1998.

Joining Ramirez and Chase on the webinar will be National Hog Farmer Editor Ann Hess as moderator.

A native of South Dakota, Hess holds a bachelor of arts degree in journalism from SDSU. Before joining National Hog Farmer in September 2018, Hess worked for AGDAILY.com and Alltech for 12 years prior to that. As Alltech’s on-farm communications manager, Hess coordinated media relations, press conferences, special events, articles, pitches and news releases with the global livestock and trade media.
