With the spread of African swine fever in China and Eastern Europe, the U.S. swine industry is preparing for the potential that ASF and other foreign animal diseases will make their way in the United States.

A collaborative effort in producing a Secure Pork Supply plan prepares U.S. pork producers and their veterinarians in the event that an FADs invades the U.S. herd. An Oct. 2 webinar “Foreign Animal Disease and Secure Pork Supply Plan: What You Need to Know” sponsored by the Pork Checkoff and hosted by National Hog Farmer will inform producers of the steps necessary.

In this webinar, Pork Checkoff’s Director of Swine Health Programs Patrick Webb will offer an update on the latest information about African swine fever and other FADs that continue to spread around the world and what steps U.S. pig farmers should be doing to protect their farms.

Highlights of this program include:

• A preview of how the new Secure Pork Supply plan’s software will provide real-time pig health information to help producers make better management decisions and improve their business continuity plans during a pig health emergency.
• Real-world insights from our expert panel on practical biosecurity practices that producers and veterinarians should already be doing to reduce their risk of exposure to the effects of both foreign and domestic diseases.

In addition to Webb, also on the webinar will be Maryn Ptaschinski, veterinarian with Texas A&M’s Institute for Infectious Animal Diseases; and Russ Nugent, Arkansas producer and chairman of the Pork Checkoff’s Swine Health Committee. Moderating this 1 p.m. (Central) Oct. 2 event will be National Hog Farmer’s Senior Staff Writer Kevin Schulz.
