University of Minnesota surveying FAD preparedness

The University of Minnesota is conducting a survey of producers to determine how quickly the industry can provide epidemiologic information needed for establishing Monitored Premises status in the event of a foreign animal disease outbreak, as well as the confidence producers have to share this information.

In the event of an FAD outbreak, new cases of FADs might be occurring rapidly and tracing contacts to potentially infected premises is imperative to limiting additional disease spread. Additionally, in order for a farm to move animals or animal products out of a Control Area via a secure food supply continuity of business permit, that farm must be designated as a Monitored Premises. Identifying potential epidemiological links to Infected Premises is one step in the regulatory process to qualify as a Monitored Premises and request a permit.

Identifying potential contacts in a timely manner will help determine appropriate premises designation.

The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete, and will help animal health officers respond to an FAD.
