An Illinois Farrowing Conference is scheduled for Dec. 8 at the University of Illinois (U of I) Extension Building on the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
The program is geared to improve the performance of sows and piglets in the farrowing barn, says Rob Knox, U of I Extension swine reproductive specialist.
Duane Reese, University of Nebraska, will cover lactation physiology, piglet nursing behavior, feeding the lactating sow and fallout pig management.
Bill Hollis, DVM, Carthage (IL) Veterinary Services, will address obstetrical intervention during farrowing, and prevention and treatment of common diseases of sows and piglets in the farrowing house.
Retired U of I Extension swine specialist Gilbert Hollis will discuss the best management practices for processing baby pigs.
Larry Firkins, U of I Extension swine veterinarian, will cover dealing with piglet mortality and proper ways to euthanize pigs. Knox will discuss the physiology of farrowing and methods of farrowing induction to reduce stillbirths.
