The Illinois Farrowing Clinic is scheduled for Dec. 8 at the University of Illinois Extension Building at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield.
An 8 a.m. optional session provides a “guided tour” of the anatomy and physiology of pregnancy and farrowing.
University of Nebraska Swine Extension Specialist Duane Reese will cover lactation and fall-out pig management.
Bill Hollis, DVM, Carthage Veterinary Services, Ltd., Carthage, IL, will cover obstetrical intervention during farrowing and prevention and treatment of common diseases in the farrowing house.
Gilbert Hollis, Emeritus Professor of University of Illinois (U of I) swine Extension, will discuss the best management practices for processing baby pigs.
Larry Firkins, DVM, U of I Extension swine veterinarian, will discuss minimizing piglet mortality and proper methods for euthanasia.
Rob Knox, U of I swine reproductive specialist, will review the physiology of farrowing and methods of induction to reduce stillbirths.
